History
Persicaria maculosa (formerly Polygonum persicaria) is native to Europe and temperate Asia. Linnaeus described it as Polygonum persicaria in 1753; Samuel Frederick Gray transferred it to Persicaria in 1821, and molecular work in the 2000s confirmed the split. The characteristic dark V-shaped smudge or 'thumbprint' on each leaf gave rise to medieval European folklore: the Virgin Mary supposedly tested the plant's medicinal value by touching a leaf, her thumbprint staining it forever but marking the plant as safe.
The species is a cool-season annual found in damp fields, roadsides, and disturbed ground worldwide. Seeds are a major waterfowl food — duck hunters sometimes call it 'duck plant'. Some Indigenous peoples used root decoctions for sore mouths.
Despite its weed status it has attractive pink flower spikes that make it borderline ornamental. Native to Europe and Asia, introduced to North America in colonial times and now one of the most common summer weeds of moist gardens and fields. The distinctive leaf thumbprint mark has a folklore association with the Virgin Mary's thumb in European tradition. An important late-summer bee and bumblebee plant.
