History
Weigela praecox occurs naturally in Korea and the Russian Far East (Ussuri region). The epithet praecox means early, referring to its earlier bloom season compared to the more commonly cultivated W. florida—flowers open two to three weeks earlier, typically in mid-May in temperate gardens, before most other weigelas begin. The pink (sometimes yellow-throated) trumpet-shaped flowers are somewhat larger than those of W. florida, and because they appear at a time when few shrub nectar sources are available, they are especially important to newly returning hummingbirds in northern gardens.
The genus Weigela was named by Carl Ludwig Willdenow in 1798 to honor the German pharmacologist Christian Ehrenfried Weigel. W. praecox was introduced to Western cultivation in the early 20th century and has since been used as a breeding parent for early-flowering hybrid weigelas. Like other weigelas it is hardy, disease-free, and largely ignored by deer.
Native to Korea and Manchuria, where it grows in mountain forests and along stream edges. While common weigela (W. florida) is more widely grown, this species offers earlier bloom, superior fragrance, and greater cold hardiness. Korean gardeners have long valued it as an early herald of spring, planting it near entryways where its fragrance can be enjoyed.
