History
Calathea roseopicta, commonly called rose-painted Calathea, is a clumping tropical foliage perennial in the prayer-plant family (Marantaceae) native to the Amazon basin rainforests of western Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador. Belgian horticulturist Jean Jules Linden described the species in 1866 based on greenhouse-grown material, the epithet roseopicta meaning rose-painted. Following the 2012 Borchsenius et al.
revision of Marantaceae, the species was transferred to Goeppertia roseopicta, but the horticultural trade persistently uses Calathea. Plants form compact 30-50 cm tall clumps of broad rounded oval leaves 15-25 cm long, with dark glossy green upper surfaces marked by a signature narrow pink-to-cream feathered arc near the leaf margin and a pink-red midrib; leaf undersides are burgundy-purple. Leaves perform the typical Marantaceae nyctinastic prayer movement—folding upward at night, opening flat during the day.
The species is the principal parent of modern cultivars including 'Dottie' (near-black with pink pattern), 'Medallion', 'Rosy', 'Corona', and 'Eclipse'. Non-toxic to pets per ASPCA. Native to Brazilian rainforests. The cultivars 'Dottie' and 'Medallion' became iconic American houseplants in the 2010s-2020s, with their bold pink and white markings making them centerpiece plants in countless modern interiors.
