History
Penstemon spectabilis is native to Southern California chaparral and montane slopes — particularly the Transverse Ranges, San Gabriel Mountains, San Bernardino Mountains, and Peninsular Ranges — and into northern Baja California, Mexico, at 200-2000 meters elevation. The species epithet "spectabilis" means "spectacular" or "showy," reflecting the plant's dramatic floral display. It is a mounding perennial 60-120 cm tall with distinctive pale-gray-green glaucous leaves that clasp the stem and produce a cool foliage effect. In late spring (typically May) it produces tall branched flower stalks 90-150 cm bearing large tubular 3-4 cm two-lipped flowers that open in a striking color gradient from pale-lavender at the tips through deeper magenta-pink to intense violet-blue in the throat — individual flowers display two or three color zones, and the overall effect of a blooming plant is of layered pastel iridescent color.
Pollinated by hummingbirds and bumblebees and a seasonal nectar magnet. The species is one of the most dramatic native California penstemons for garden and meadow planting, widely available in California-native nurseries. Grows well in full sun in well-drained soil with moderate summer water; unlike many Penstemons it is moderately tolerant of garden conditions and relatively long-lived (4-7 years), though still appreciates occasional division or replacement.
Described in 1855 by botanist Asa Gray based on specimens collected in Southern California. One of the most floriferous penstemon species, a mature clump can produce dozens of bloom stalks simultaneously. Ideal for the back of the border in Southern California native gardens, often combined with Salvia clevelandii and Encelia californica.
