Agrostemma githago is native to Europe and western Asia, from the British Isles and Iberia east through the Caucasus and into Iran. For millennia it was one of the most common weeds of European grain fields — growing alongside wheat, rye, and barley with an eerily similar seed size and seedling appearance that made it almost impossible to remove during hand harvest or pre-modern seed cleaning. The seeds contain githagin and related saponins that are moderately toxic: chronic consumption of corncockle-contaminated bread flour caused the historical "corncockle poisoning" (also called "githagism") — a gastrointestinal and nervous complaint recognized in European medical literature from the medieval period through the early 20th century, characterized by weakness, vertigo, GI upset, and sometimes death in severe cases of contaminated-flour consumption. Modern 20th-century grain-cleaning technology — sieves, air-flow separators, gravity tables — effectively separates corncockle seeds from grain, and by approximately the 1960s-70s the species had largely disappeared from European commercial wheat fields.
Its disappearance has been so complete that it is now listed as endangered or near-extinct as a wild grain-field plant in the UK, Germany, Poland, and several other European countries — a striking transformation from noxious common weed to conservation priority within less than a century. It is still widely grown from seed as a pretty meadow-style garden annual with magenta-pink five-petaled flowers. Corn cockle was so intertwined with European grain farming that its toxic seeds were a genuine public health hazard for centuries.
Before modern seed-cleaning technology, bread made from contaminated wheat could cause digestive illness and, in extreme cases, death.
