History

Astilbe simplicifolia is narrowly endemic to limestone cliffs and stream sides on the Japanese island of Honshu. Pioneering Japanese botanist Tomitaro Makino, often called the father of Japanese botany, described the species in 1902. Its specific epithet refers to the simple (undivided) leaves unusual among astilbes, which typically have compound foliage.

Growing only 8-12 inches tall, it produces airy arching panicles of tiny white star-shaped flowers. German breeder Georg Arends used it to create celebrated dwarf hybrids including 'Sprite' (Perennial Plant of the Year 1994), 'Praecox Alba', and 'Hennie Graafland'.

These small-scale selections extended astilbe's usefulness into rock gardens, containers, and the fronts of shaded borders where taller species would overwhelm. Native to Japan, introduced to Western cultivation in the late 1800s. 'Sprite', a Georg Arends hybrid, won the Perennial Plant of the Year award in 1994, sealing its place in American shade-garden horticulture.
