History
Astilbe chinensis ranges across temperate East Asia from China through Korea and the Russian Far East. French missionary Armand David collected specimens in the 1860s, and Russian botanist Carl Maximowicz published the name in 1877. German plantsman Georg Arends, operating the renowned Arends-Staudengärtnerei from the 1890s through mid-20th century, used it extensively in breeding, producing countless hybrid astilbes that bear his name (Astilbe x arendsii).
The low-growing variety pumila became a dependable groundcover in shade gardens worldwide. Later selections like 'Purpurlanze' (Purple Lance, 1952), 'Finale', and 'Visions' extended the blooming season into late summer.
A. chinensis is notable for greater drought tolerance than most astilbe species. Introduced from China and Korea in the late 1800s. The Vision series, developed in the Netherlands in the 1990s and widely distributed by American perennial wholesalers, brought reliable drought tolerance and vivid color to US shade-garden perennials.
