History
Dracaena fragrans is widespread across tropical Africa, from Sudan and Ethiopia south to Mozambique, where it forms tall multi-stemmed groves in upland forest. European botanists described it in 1767, and by the late 19th century it was a standard conservatory plant in Britain and Germany. The species name 'fragrans' honors its flowers, which are remarkable: produced only on very mature plants and only at night, they release an extraordinarily strong sweet scent likened to hyacinth or honeysuckle, powerful enough to fill a large room.
The striped cultivar 'Massangeana', known commercially as the Corn Plant, was introduced in the 1880s and remains the dominant indoor form a century and a half later, valued for its tolerance of low light and dry heated air. In West Africa, Dracaena fragrans holds deep cultural significance. The Yoruba people plant it around homes as a living fence believed to bring blessings and protect against evil spirits.
In Cameroon, it marks sacred spaces and boundaries. European plant hunters brought it to Victorian conservatories in the 1850s, where its tolerance of gas-lit interiors made it unusually successful. The plant became so associated with 1970s interior design that it earned the affectionate nickname 'the corn plant' for its resemblance to a tropical corn stalk.
