History
Geranium phaeum grows naturally in mountain woodlands and meadows of central Europe from the Pyrenees to the Balkans. Linnaeus described it in 1753 with the epithet phaeum meaning dark or dusky in Greek, referencing the unusually somber near-black flowers. The plant was introduced to British gardens by the 17th century and naturalized widely, particularly in churchyards—which may have contributed to the Victorian common name mourning widow.
Cultivars including 'Samobor' (introduced by Elizabeth Strangman from Croatia in 1990), 'Album' (white-flowered), 'Lily Lovell' (large mauve), and 'Margaret Wilson' (variegated) spread throughout shade garden design. It tolerates dry shade better than most geraniums. The plant is traditionally a symbol of remembrance.
