History

Zantedeschia rehmannii grows in seasonally wet grasslands of KwaZulu-Natal and Eswatini. The Moravian-born botanist Anton Rehmann collected the type specimen during his South African travels, and John Gilbert Baker described it at Kew in 1891. It is the naturally pink-flowered calla species, slender and elegant rather than grand.

That pink spathe changed calla breeding. When Dutch and New Zealand breeders crossed it with yellow Z. elliottiana and related species, they opened the door to modern colored hybrid callas in rose, orange, burgundy, and near-black tones. By the 1990s those tubers had become widely available as spring-planted bulbs for containers and summer gardens, and colored callas became standard in cut-flower work. The plant's own flowers are modest, but its genes broke the old white-calla tradition and gave the genus its modern palette.
