History
Deutzia purpurascens inhabits rocky thickets and forest edges in northwestern Yunnan, China. The French Catholic missionary Jean Marie Delavay, working in the Dali region from 1867, collected specimens sent to the Paris Museum where Franchet first mentioned it. Alfred Rehder of the Arnold Arboretum formally described the species in 1912.
Its distinctive purple-pink-tinged white flowers, rare in the genus, made it a valuable parent for the Lemoine nursery's hybridization work with other deutzias between 1890 and 1920; crosses with D. discolor produced 'Rosea' and other popular garden forms. Wild-type D. purpurascens remains less common in Western gardens but is prized by collectors for its graceful arching habit and bronze-purple fall foliage.
Specimens grow at Kew and the Arnold Arboretum. Native to western China, collected by French missionary botanists in the late 1800s and introduced to European and American gardens around 1900. A key parent in Victor Lemoine's famous Deutzia hybrid breeding program that produced many modern garden cultivars.
