History
Deutzia x hybrida refers collectively to garden hybrids of the Asian genus Deutzia developed primarily by Victor Lemoine and his son Émile at the family nursery in Nancy, France, between about 1890 and 1925. They crossed several species including Deutzia longifolia, D. purpurascens, D. discolor, and D. vilmoriniae. Notable cultivars include 'Contraste' (c.1898), 'Magicien' (1927), 'Mont Rose' (1925), and 'Perle Rose' (1935).
Lemoine's deutzias transformed the genus from small-flowered white shrubs into large-flowered rose-and-lilac garden plants, winning RHS Awards of Garden Merit. The hybrids remain among the most reliable deciduous late-spring shrubs for mixed borders, with 'Mont Rose' a lasting favorite for its deep pink panicles on 1.5 m arching stems.
Bred by French nurseryman Victor Lemoine in the late 1800s through crosses of Deutzia gracilis and Deutzia purpurascens and others. The 'Mont Rose' and 'Magicien' cultivars became popular in American refined borders in the 20th century, valued for refined flower form and compact growth.
