History
Salvia verticillata grows wild from central and southeastern Europe through Turkey to Iran on disturbed ground and dry meadows. Linnaeus named it in 1753 referencing the whorled (verticillate) flower arrangement. The species was a minor herb garden plant until Dutch designer Piet Oudolf selected and introduced the cultivar 'Purple Rain' in the 1990s through his nursery at Hummelo.
This cultivar, featuring smoky purple flower spikes, became iconic in Oudolf's naturalistic plantings including New York's High Line, Lurie Garden in Chicago, and the Venetian Oudolf Garden. Along with selection 'Smouldering Torches', it exemplified the New Perennial aesthetic favoring texture, structure, and extended seasonal interest over conventional flashy bloom. The cultivar 'Purple Rain' became a favorite of New Perennial Movement designers like Piet Oudolf in the late 20th century. Self-seeds modestly in American gardens, producing delightful volunteers in naturalistic schemes.
